Sometimes a girl just needs a drink.
Way before happy hour would ever be appropriate.
When water’s just not gonna cut it, and you’ve already had your [clean] coffee, tea or kombucha for the day.
You need a mental break. Something nice. A tiny “ahh” in your day.
But one that won’t make your body, your focus or your energy to say “ugh” 2 hours later.
And because I hate the word “mocktail”.
Come on. Mocktail?
Because I think a little more respect + glamour while drinking your daily water might actually get you excited about doing it. Which will maybe make you want to drink it more. Which is good. A “mocktail” rarely seems as exciting. Or cool. Can we agree?
Mocktail out. This “refresher”, in. Because that’s exactly what it will do. Hydrate, refresh, and re-energize that little head and those body cells of yours so you can keep being awesome. All through the day.
Which is why this is my current fav.
That– and that I got the idea from one of my favorite clients. I LOVE seeing their creativity with food trump mine after they get real-food as a philosophy and lifestyle. The best thing ever.
And after a long day of hard work [and I know having wine will just make me sleep worse], or a mid-afternoon when I have to power through something mentally challenging or just something fun to sip on to keep me from reaching for snacks when I don’t need it, this stuff is gold. Refreshing liquid gold.
With a meyer lemon [yes, only in season a short amount of time in late winter/early spring], you get an amazing sweeter flavor without any sugar [yes, they are different than a regular lemon- it’s more of a cross between a lemon and a orange], but with all of the amazing benefits of drinking and eating lemons: highly absorbable vitamin c content, a natural alkalizer to your inner cells and body, and a natural bitter content that helps the digestive process run much more smoothly.
And with a leaf or two of fresh basil, you’ve got yourself a little beauty too.
So, we’ve got: tastes good, looks good, and is good for you. A #triplethreat, wouldn’t you say?
Drink well + prosper my darling healthies.
Meyer Lemon + Basil Refresher
Makes 1 delicious serving
6-8 oz sparkling water
1/2 meyer lemon, squeezed
1 leaf of basil (optional, for garnish)
Combine and serve over ice.
Vodka, gin or prosecco optional
Other variation ideas: adding a splash of raw apple cider vinegar to up the health benefits and add some tartness, adding a other sweet green herbs like cilantro, thyme, or sage, or using muddled berries or cucumber instead of the citrus.
