So be sure to come by and visit the blog weekly this month and get a little dose of inspiration, encouragement and true, big healthy LOVE.
So today, I’d like you to meet one very awesome couple.
When I met Krissi and Dieter, they had just had their 1st baby girl, a few months earlier. They wanted to get into a good healthy routine for themselves, to be on the same page with each other in their understanding of food (um, so important as a couple), and to learn some quick new ideas that they could incorporate into their new family + life ahead together.
Krissi continued to lose her baby weight + cravings even within the first 2 weeks of working together. Dieter had noticed so much more energy by the end of the first week. They cook and shop together and make it fun. And now baby Ella is starting to eat…. real food of course. How lucky is she? And what a difference it will play out to be in her life, I am convinced. I’m smiling as I write this, thinking about it. Every child deserves that.
Q [Sarah]: How long has it been since we started our work together?
A [Krissi + Dieter]: We started in October of 2013 so we’ve been at it for about 5 months. We were just on the other end of having our first sweet baby girl in July and felt like we were on solid enough ground to focus and commit to a plan.
[Q]: What was your “last straw” moment? The time that you remember thinking- this is enough! I’m ready for a change that’s going to last. Or, alternatively, what were you struggling with the most before we met?
Getting to the point of change was different for each of us I think. At some point I [Dieter] became self aware of how I was feeling overall and came to the conclusion I didn’t feel as good as I thought I should.. or could. Afternoons with an unsettled stomach and some days with a headache were becoming the normal not the exception. I came across the Simply Real Health information online and it spoke directly to those things and it got me motivated to shake things up! Krissi had some health/fitness goals she had been working on and I shared the info as I thought it would be in line with what she was trying to do as well. I had brought up the information a year before we actually started together and at that time she was not ready for change quite yet. I knew it was the right thing to do and more or less persuaded her on board. Of course by that time she was pregnant and trying new/different things wasn’t appealing so we waited until it felt right.
When we did get started, she eventually was as excited about process as I was and was running the show in no time. For her, after the first month there was a discovery of not even realizing how bad she was feeling before starting until she felt better and things began to make a lot of sense why. That makes it so much easier to understand and continue to do it– when it all makes so much sense. We were just in a fog before, but didn’t know it.
[Q]: What was going through your head when we first started working together (you can be honest—were you doubtful, etc?)
No, I think right from the start we were excited. And in that first session you did with us, everything made a lot of sense. We were ready to try things we might not have prepared on our own and learn to prep better for the week. Krissi was a little scared of the accountability piece we included in our plan but it proved to be a such a valuable process for both of us.
[Q]: Any daily symptoms that you used to have but are gone now?
I think we both had some general stomach aches and headaches that have cleared up. I know that I had issues with headaches and feeling of crashing if I didn’t eat something often enough, but I’ve found I can go longer without that feeling and don’t experience any sort of crash. Which makes the day’s a lot easier to get things done. I feel more energized and productive.
[Q]: What is different about your day to day life post working together? How are you different: mentally, physically, spiritually or emotionally?
Krissi: I think more carefully about what I actually put in my body. Before I looked more at the calories- it was all about the numbers instead of what it was that I was actually eating. I am excited about eating now. I know its going to be a real, bright, flavorful, and satisfying meal. But more importantly, I feel good from it.
Dieter: I suppose its kind of the cliche answer but there is just a general sense of feeling better. You have more energy and can think a little clearer. After getting home at the end of the day I’m not so wiped out that exercise feels out of the question. It’s empowering on many levels to have a plan in place and follow.
[Q]: What is your favorite “treat”?
We love to make popcorn on the stove top with coconut oil for a movie night. Just a little bit of sea salt seasoning and it brings out its own buttery-like goodness.
[Q]: What is your favorite travel snack, or on the go food option(s)?
We would have had little faith in picking anything up pre-packaged in a place not serving food as their primary product but we were pleased with Starbucks’ quick grab kale salad. Easy to grab, we could see and read what was in it and it ended up being quit satisfying, bunch of veggies, who knew…?
[Q]: What is your favorite real food recipe and/or what real-food recipe do you make the most often?
I don’t know what it is but your polenta hash with roasted veggies and fried eggs hits the spot. Kind of a hearty home feel, tons of delicious veggies and the little bit of yolk drizzling over top adds some worry free decadence. It works great for dinner and breakfast for us and is really easy to make. Its one of those ones we eat slow to savor it because it’s so good and we don’t want it to end!
[Q]: What would be your advice to someone who used to be just like you and/or a healthy tip to share with everyone?
When it comes to food, if you’er on the fence with doing a customized coaching plan with Sarah, take it to the next level. It’s worth it. Of all the things we take on and do in our day-to-day lives, some of the most important things tend to get moved down on our priority list. Things like our health and how it is affected by our food, moving our bodies keeping our minds in a healthy place never get the time they need. This will put you in control of real food and will touch all aspects of your life. It is worth it.
[Q]: When you feel in a healthy funk, what helps you pull out of it?
You can never go wrong with a green smoothie. Quick, easy, and tastes good. You know your getting goodness and your body responds to it. [Get Sarah’s collection of the best green smoothies right here in PDF form]
[Q]: Anything else you’d like to share?
We have truly adopted what we have learned into to our daily lives. We live it. And it’s not hard to do. On the weekends we will plan our meal and make a shopping list for the week (we have a new dry erase meal board on the fridge to do this). If able, we will shop together and prepare for the week that same weekend. There is flexibility week to week based on what is going on in our lives, but we make our food decisions based on real food first. Challenges present and there are times some less then favorable foods will show up but it is the exception and not the rule. Our default is healthy now, which is so cool to say.
