It had to have been November. Right after I shot the videos for my Favorite Picks at Trader Joe’s [see round 1 + round 2 here].
You guys liked it. Asked for more.
So, I shot another video around the same time, showing my favorite picks at Whole Foods + my favorite local spot, PCC Natural Markets [and stores like them, across the nation].
But.
They have totally disappeared!
Like tamagachis and swishy pants.
Never to be seen again.
Maybe it’s for the best.
So instead, you can just SEE what I mean instead of having to listen to me get carried away with all the things you can do with these multi-functional and fun healthy staples.
A quick word on grocery stores: people ask me all the time where I shop. Well, unsurprisingly, I LOVE fresh, bright and seasonal food and going to beautiful grocery stores like PCC and Whole Foods when I get the chance, solely because I like the experience of it. It soothes me. Inspires me. And makes me appreciate the process. And I think it’s easier to find good thing in less time- without as much scouring and hunting on ingredient labels. And I eat real food so I don’t need to shop for very much of it, which keeps the cost down.
But, that being said, I truly believe you can find healthy, real food at any grocery store. You just have to know what to look for. Today’s focus, however, is on a few things that only natural grocery stores tend to carry, so they are things worth grabbing the next time you happen to be there. Luckily, most are staples that be stored easily, so that you can stock up and save yourself a trip or two.
So today, round 1:
My 9 favorite natural food store picks:
1. Nature Preferred Brown Rice Pizza Crust:
Gluten-free and 3 clean ingredients. But even better texture [thin and crunchy]. Use in place of frozen pizza and build the ones of your dreams. Found in the freezer section.
2. Nutritional Yeast:
Yes, I know. You hate the name. Me too. But it’s just a spice found in the bulk section and one that has a great cheesy sprinkled over popcorn, or used in place of cheese in 2 of my favorite recipes: Almond Parmesan Crusted Chicken Strips and the Cashew Pesto Kale Salad.
3. Sunshine Burgers Falafel Patties:
I love falafel. And easy. Therefore I like these. These totally pure patties are a great addition to any last minute dinner. Combine with a salad or roasted frozen veggies and you have yourself a meal. Vegetarian, and no soy, tofu or other fake-meat crap involved, which is hard to find in that freezer section. GF too.
4. Eden Organic Gomaiso Sesame Seeds:
This is a little mix of sesame seeds, dried seaweed + sea salt make this my favorite condiment- on avocados, eggs, salads, soups and almost anything. Really. You get a great crunch, and a bunch of great trace minerals like iodine and vitamin k to support healthy thyroid function.
6. Natural Delights Medjool Dates:
These are the best natural sweet treat on the block in my opinion. I may also have an addiction to them. Great to add to your green smoothies, or in healthier baking recipes like the ones in my cookbook. My favorite? Sliced open, smeared with a bit of peanut butter and sprinkle of sea salt. Broil in the oven if you want to go to heaven. Store them in the fridge for the best texture.
7. Synergy Kombucha, Gingerade:
If you’ve never tried kombucha {a traditional fermented tea}, get on it. It’s so good and so good for you and this is my favorite flavor. The perfect natural pick-me-up- and great bacteria for your digestive and immune systems.
8. Vitamineral Green Powder:
This is a great extra smoothie booster (or replacement if you are out of fresh greens). I love this powder form because it has no fillers, weird ingredients, sweeteners or stevia involved. It always has some great probiotics in it too to aid with digestion and immune support. Start with a little tsp and work your way up- it’s potent and amazing stuff!
9. Angus Ranch Organic Lamb Burger Patties:
Well sourced, antibiotic and hormone free, and an ingredient list of one. It’s easy to see how these are one of my favorite freezer buys. Pan fry or grill with some veggies or a great sauce, and you have a satisfying healthy meal on hand at all times!
And with that, happy {and healthy} shopping! And stay tuned for Round 2, there are so many great things to share!
